General Information

This species has quite a variable ground colour, ranging from pale brown to almost black in colour.

 

Pupates in leaf litter.

Overwinters as a pupa.
Both sexes readily come to light, sometimes in numbers.
Often found at rest during day

Forewing length: 20-24mm.
Foodplant(s): Hazel (Corylus avellana), birches (Betula spp.), hawthorns (Crataegus spp.), Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), oaks (Quercus spp.), willows (Salix spp.), lime (Tilia spp.), privets (Ligustrum spp.), coniferous trees, broadleaved shrubs
Flying: One generation, May-June
UK Presence: Resident
National status: Not endangered
